Training youth ambassadors to lead curated travel experiences in Penglipuran, a traditional Balinese village
MISSION
The project aims to contribute to the preservation and revitalizion of cultural heritage within Penglipuran Village, in Bali. Penglipuran was crowned one of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Best Tourism Villages for 2023, and is recognized as one of the cleanest villages in the world. It draws visitors from around the globe, who are seeking authentic cultural experiences. However, while the village serves as a living museum of Balinese culture, urbanization threatens its heritage preservation and many locals do not benefit accordingly from tourism. Quantum Temple aims to empower locals through a comprehensive hospitality education and training – across disciplines such as cooking, tour guiding and security – while transforming people into cultural ambassadors through English language lessons.
OBJECTIVE
PROJECT SUMMARY
Replete with well-preserved traditional Balinese architecture in a unique layout, and recognized for maintaining age-old customs, Penglipuran village ranks high as a must-visit Balinese cultural tourism destination. The village receives over 1,500 tourists every day, which simultaneously presents opportunities and challenges.
For one, there is a pressing need to enhance the quality of the services offered to visitors, including the creation of more immersive experiences and activities. Improving the experiential offering will ensure a better overall visitor satisfaction and result in increased income across the community. Meanwhile, there is a missed opportunity in properly educating visitors on the history of Penglipuran village. This is where our project comes in: Quantum Temple aims to ensure that visitors leave with more than a camera roll of photos and instead are instilled with a deep understanding of the history and significance of Penglipuran. As such, we believe it is necessary to empower local peoples’ learning and to equip them with English language skills. Educating people on the cultural heritage mitigates the risk of cultural erosion, while speaking English will empower people to effectively communicate the historical narratives and cultural significance of Penglipuran.
We recognize the power of education in cultural restoration and transmission. Through empowering education among Penglipuran's local people, they will become equipped to share their distinct culture with the world. As cultural ambassadors, they will be able to detail the stories behind traditional dishes, explain the intricacies of their temple's histories and ensure the heritage of this unique destination endures.
