Creating a dance troupe to revitalize the Jogéd Pingitan, a traditional Balinese dance
MISSION
Quantum Temple aims to revitalize the Jogéd Pingitan, a sacred Balinese dance that is of particular significance to the Sebali village, in Gianyar, Bali. This cultural revitalization project aims to introduce the younger generations to this time-honored dance, with the goal of bridging a generational gap and promoting community engagement. Quantum Temple aims to encourage active participation among the Sebali village and empower the community to establish a troupe for public performances. The Sebali village has the potential to become a Balinese cultural tourism hotspot, with the Jogéd Pingitan performances central to this status.
OBJECTIVES
PROJECT SUMMARY
Jogéd Pingitan is a dynamic, improvisational performance, featuring intricate movements and complex footwork. The moves are inspired by the Légong and Kakebyaran dances, while the performance traces a narrative of beauty, passion and destruction in its retelling of a fable from the Kingdom of Eranggia. According to the legend, the headdress used by the Sebali villagers is a gift from God, which was found at Pura Jemeng, one of the village's three temples.
However, there is a waning interest in the Jogéd Pingitan among the younger generations. This is part of a larger issue surrounding the erosion of vital cultural practices through globalization, which threatens the loss of rich cultural heritage within communities and a sense of local identity, and creates a disconnect between generations. As such, our aim is to support community cohesion and regenerate this cultural practice within the Sebali village through focusing on the younger generations. Our strategy includes empowering community engagement workshops, dance revival classes, the creation of a dance troupe, costume and music revival, and ultimately public performances. We aim to encourage the education of this cultural practice within the community, and to develop the prospects of cultural-based tourism for the community.
This project will bring together members of the Sebali community. There will be a dedicated teacher, who is an expert with the knowledge and skills to perform the Jogéd Pingitan, guiding the younger generation. There is no limit for the amount of people who can participate in the dance. Additionally, the project will involve a traditional gamelan orchestra of 15 people, featuring male performers from the village and an experienced orchestra director who has a deep reverence for Jogéd Pingitan. Gamelan is an Indonesian percussion orchestra, which includes instruments such as the Bonang, Gong and Saron. Through this collective expertise and the synergy between members of the Sebali community, our goal is that the Jogéd Pingitan is transmitted to the younger generation with authenticity.
