Reinstating a Balinese temple: renovating the building with new developments

MISSION

The objective of this project is to restore and rekindle the sacred Pura Pucak Bukit Pintu temple, nearby the village of Duda Timur, Bali. For generations, Pura Pucak Bukit Pintu has been a place of worship for its local Hindu population of one thousand people. However, the temple is 30 minutes away from the village and accessible only by foot, making it off-bounds for much of the community. As such, significant spiritual ceremonies are not being practiced and risk not being transmitted to the next generation. Quantum Temple aims to ensure there is cultural continuity through a tripartite approach. We aim to connect the community with Pura Pucak Bukit Pintu through building a road, which will in turn facilitate the movement of materials for on-site construction projects. These include a new staircase and temple platform, and the restoration of a water spring. This project supports the on-site construction at Pura Pucak Bukit Pintu.

OBJECTIVE

PROJECT SUMMARY

Pura Pucak Bukit Pintu is said to be located as close to the Hindu deities as possible. The stone structure is built atop a hill – shooting up into the sky, and reaching for the heavens to bridge the Earth and Divine. It offers the people of Duda Timur the greatest connection to the sacred. Offerings of flowers, food and incense line the entrance to the temple, jostling for space amongst the overgrown shrubbery and jungle landscape. Pura Pucak Bukit Pintu is the oldest temple in the region for the Duda Timur community, however it isn't its age but its geography that makes it particularly sacred within Balinese culture.

The temple serves as a protector for the community. Watching over the community, Pura Pucak Bukit Pintu maintains peace and harmony among the villagers, and keeps negativity at bay. Duda Timur villagers also look to the water from the temple for protection and purification. For the Balinese, water cleanses the soul and facilitates a greater sense of inner peace.

But, despite its significance to the Duda Timur community, many people are unable to access the temple, and partake in its ceremonies and rituals. Inaccessible by vehicles and in high altitude, Pura Pucak Bukit Pintu is a struggle to reach for much of the community. Quantum Temple aims to change this through the construction of a road that connects people with the site. Simultaneously, the construction of the road will allow for building materials to reach the temple. Pura Pucak Bukit Pintu requires extensive restoration inside and outside, including its performance area that will allow more people to take part in the rituals and its water spring to distribute the water to the community members during ceremonies. Our mission goes beyond the restoration of a physical structure, rekindling a source of spiritual and cultural significance within the Duda Timur community.
