Pura Tirta Empul is a Hindu temple that has been actively used for purification rituals since 926 A.D. Meaning 'Holy Spring' in Balinese, Tirta Empul was built for Vishnu, the Hindu God of Water. Today, it draws people from across the globe to experience ritual purification for the mind, body and spirit. Guided by local cultural custodians and community members, you can experience a water blessing ceremony ('Melukat') at Pura Tirta Empul, and learn about the temple's history and architecture. The experience includes Balinese snacks and drinks in the Wantilan hall of the temple, a photo opportunity, and finishes with a tour around the community area where you will discover how the village works together to preserve Pura Tirta Empul.

Melukat is a sacred purification ritual, rooted in Balinese Hindu culture. This spiritual ceremony seeks to cleanse the mind, body and spirit – washing away physical and metaphysical impurities with water. The ritual includes showering participants with water from a sacred spiring, which is imbued with a spiritual essence, and believed to possess healing and purification qualities.

This ritual's intention to purify and renew people means it is universal in its design – transcending religious, cultural or national boundaries. Despite its Hindu origin, Melukat is accessible to all willing participants across varying religious backgrounds, nationalities or beliefs.
