Empowering Balinese youth to perform weekly cultural shows at Pura Tirta Empul, a Hindu temple

MISSION:

The goal of this economic empowerment project is to generate a regular, sustainable income for a local community nearby to the Pura Tirta Empul temple. Collaborating with cultural preservation organizations to ensure the authenticity of practices and performances, Quantum Temple aims to empower the local community to activate weekly shows at Pura Tirta Empul, led by young community members. The funds generated for this project will be used to fairly pay teachers – who will provide comprehensive cultural educations and performance guidance – and to purchase traditional costumes and instruments for performances.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

Pura Tirta Empul is a Hindu temple that has been actively used for purification rituals since 926 A.D. Meaning 'Holy Spring' in Balinese, Tirta Empul was built for Vishnu, the Hindu God of Water. Today, this temple, near to Tampaksiring, Bali draws people from across the globe to experience ritual purification for the mind, body and spirit. But there is a missed opportunity to offer authentic cultural experiences, while generating a sustainable income for the community.

This project at Pura Tirta Empul aims to empower up to 30 local Balinese youth to actively participate in weekly shows, including performing the traditional Manukaya dance and playing instruments as part of a gamelan orchestra. The core objectives of this project are to generate a new, sustainable income source for the temple and community members, while offering an authentic cultural experience for visitors.

Through empowering the youth to immerse themselves in their customs and rituals during a comprehensive cultural education, this project aims to foster a sense of pride among Balinese community members. The training period will last between three-to-five months, during which time the funds raised will be directed towards the teachers of the training program, purchasing the gamelan and traditional costumes, and renting a rehearsal space. In collaboration with the local community, Quantum Temple aims to develop a long-term sustainability plan, including partnerships and funding sources.
